Duffy made this album with Albert Hammond Sr. (Albert Hammond Jr. plays guitar in The Strokes) who wrote songs for the Hollies, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Chicago and many others (he also wrote and performed “It Never Rains In Southern California). Duffy also worked with The Roots (New York) this time.
The result is a radio friendly, well-produced pop record on which every song can stand for itself and 3-4 of them will be hits (“Breath Away”, “Hard For The Heart”, “Don’t Forsake Me”, the opening song “My Boy”), I even think that it can beat the 6,5 million mark of “Rockferry”. Although there is a lot of talent show jury verdicts like in The Telegraph: “although Duffy’s voice ticks lots of boxes, there’s a big blank space where her soul should be. And when she sings of heartache, I don’t believe it’s anything that couldn’t be fixed by a chocolate milkshake and something twinkly”, other people don’t get tired comparing her with Amy Winehouse, I do.
“Endlessly” has everything, from ballads (“To Hurt To dance”, “Don’t Forsake Me”) to up-tempo retro disco songs (“My Boy”, “Girl”) and Duffy is even rapping in the intro to “Lovestruck”, it’s funky too. Of course, the album is no music landmark, its makers didn’t think they were creating one either, but it proves craftsmanship of everyone involved.
And, yes it is the perfect Christmas present for mom.
